While I was in Kolkata last year, I bought some books on College Street. Being rather indiscriminate in my reading, I bought books on various subjects like literature, anatomy, and psychology.
Among those books was this little booklet on Schizophrenia.
However when I tried to read it, it brought back terrible memories of my own bout of depression so I put it in my shelf and forgot about it. Some days back, I tried to pull out something and this book fell down, revealing this:
The Devnagari script is in ink-pen(or quill?) and says ‘Vij Raj’, which seems to be a name. I thought it was empty at first, but when I opened it I found this:
I was stunned. I would understand if I found a photo of a young man in a book of poems or perhaps a novel. But in a book about mental disorders? What is that supposed to mean?
I wonder who the guy is. He looks really young, his clothes don't reveal what era or ago he is from. But the furniture in the background, and the wooden windows remind me of our old house where my grandparents lived. That was in the 1960s or earlier perhaps. I tried to look at what he is holding in his hand. Can anybody tell me what it is?
Lastly, is it my imagination or does he look a little scary? He sure freaks me out, perhaps it is the large bulbous eyes or the V-shaped eyebrows. I don’t know.
I found out about the Virginia Tech massacre, ironically not via newspaper or television but from a blog. At first it did not register, V-Tech is so far off. Blacksburg? Sounded familiar.
Then it hit me. Not so far off. I know people who went there. I know people who live close to V-Tech. Suddenly, one could not remain detached.
Then in the newspaper today. Two of the people killed were of Indian origin. The gunman was of Asian origin.
The people killed or shot were not only American, but spanned from all over the world.
One gunman, thirty-three lives.
How does one remain detached?
The weekend's been busy as usual, with friends and family and unfortunately work also. I had time to make a collage plus sketch, but not time enough to complete it.
Anyway as I was listening to my user interviews today morning I had time to make little sketches. I am wearing huge rings in my ears today, and I have scruffy curly hair...
Video: Show us your favorite show, scene or movie that takes place in the future.
Without doubt, 'The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy' is the finest science fiction comedy book/movie ever made! I love the scene where everyone turns into wool, but could not find it on youtube so next best funny scene down below. I just love Arthur Dent's Brit accent:)
Do you believe there is intelligent life on other planets?
There is hardly any intelligent life on this planet..can't expect much from other planets.
On second thoughts, if there is life elsewhere, and it is intelligent...then I am sure they focus cameras on our planet and teach their little alien children 'how not to live' using our example.
